As we begin the new school year, I recognize that this new learning model will be a challenge for many students. However, I would encourage all my students to approach their online learning experience like they do when attending in-person instruction.
All students must log into each class according to our block schedule. Periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 meet Monday and Thursday. Periods 2, 4, 6 and Advisory Period meet on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays scholars will attend all classes period 1 through 7. Scholars will enter my class through the Clever portal. Everything will be clearly labeled. Students should come prepared to learn and have basic supplies available.
Roll will be taken, just like during person instruction. I would encourage your student to be ready and logged in a few minutes early if possible. If students log in late they will be marked tardy by our attendance system.
My curriculum covers art skills, art history, analysis and reflection. In addition I cover a variety of cross curricular subjects by touching on math skills, science concepts, social studies, music, and language arts skills.
Students are expected to participate in our Zoom sessions (synchronous) and work independently (asynchronous). Like all other classes in middle school students earn a grade in Exploratory Art. I have very generous due dates as I want my students to take their time and do their best work but I do expect assignments to be turned in on time. We work at “medium” speed.
I do not take late work past grading periods.. This mean you have until progress reports to turn in work. Once a progress report or grade has been posted, you will not be able to turn in late work. Our class time together is more than enough time for you to complete your work especially since I do not assign homework. Please use your class time wisely.
If your student is absent/sick and unable to complete an assignment by a given due date please contact me so that I can make accommodations.
Effort, enthusiasm and accountability are key. If your student is struggling with an assignment please have them reach out to me. I want to help my students learn to advocate for themselves and I am always happy to help.
Most assignments have a 10 point value with more in-depth and complex assignments having a greater point value. Students should expect to have quizzes (10 points) and tests (typically, 25-40 points).
If any student is caught cheating or turning in work that is not their own, the project receives an automatic “0” and a written “reflection” will be sent home.
Grading scale is as follows:
A (100-90%), B (89-80%), C (79-70%), D (69%-60%), F (59% and below).
