Volume 8 : October 30. 2020
ALEBRIJES, RED RIBBON WEEK and YAYOI KUSAMA We are off and running for our 2nd quarter of Exploratory Art! Since our return from Fall Break, your scholars have been engaged in one of our more popular units, LOS ALEBRIJES! Scholars learned about the origins of this fantastical folk art from Mexico! Students were challenged to create their own magical Alebrijes and bring them to life with lots of color and detail. I was very impressed by the creativity they showed! Be sure to check them out in our class gallery. This week, we turned our attention to Red Ribbon Week and our artist of the week, Yayoi Kusama. On Monday/Tuesday, your scholar created an anti-drug poster in honor of Red Ribbon Week. RRW started over 30 years ago to honor the life of Kiki Camerena, a DEA agent who was killed in the line of duty. Scholars created thoughtful posters and were treated to a school wide, virtual assembly with a working DEA agent! On Wednesday we started our exploration of Yayoi Kusama. Kusama is known as the Princess of Polka Dots! Be sure to ask your scholar why and how she earned this nickname! We have explored her art, watched instructional videos and even read a story about her art and life. Our art lesson for the week revolved around students creating Kusama style pumpkins, or kobacha, using the elements of art, Color and Line to demonstrate Rhythm/Repetition and Unity in their artwork. It’s always a treat to watch my scholars apply what they have learned to create their art. ACADEMICS We are now in the second quarter and we are in full swing with online learning. By now your scholar should know how to upload all assignments to our Synergy/Student Vue Dropbox. Unless your scholar has spoken directly to me, please do not email me submissions. The expectation is that your scholar be able to upload their projects in a timely fashion. Again, unless your scholar has spoken with me, has an excused absence or other personal issue, all projects are to be turned in on time. I WILL NOT BE ACCEPTING LATE WORK. I give my scholars plenty of time in which to complete their artwork. I do not assign homework so students should be able to complete their work in class. In addition, I keep the drop box on all assignments open for a week after the project (effectively giving scholars additional time), so there is no reason for work to be turned in more than a week after assigned. Please review this policy with your scholar. |
REMINDER: ALL ASSIGNMENTS must be uploaded into Synergy no later than October 8.
